World War One Commemoration Project

As almost everyone in the Country will now be aware, the centenary of the start of the First World War is almost upon us and events to mark that anniversary are being planned all around the world.

The Coast Explorer Scout Unit have been doing their bit and have been working in conjunction with the Tynemouth World War One Commemoration project for a number of months now to help make a memorial garden.

The garden is an area in the Linskill Community Centre and they have certainly had their work cut out.

When they first became involved the garden was seriously over grown, but thanks to their hard work in conjunction with some of the project's volunteers it has been tidied to a point where work can be done to make it a garden to be proud of.

The project's plans are to place boards around a low wall naming everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice during those four long years.

The photos below show the work that has been done in the garden by our Explorer Scouts and some of the project's volunteers. Thanks to the project for the "before" photos.

Work is still needed before the garden will be finished and it's hoped that other sections of the District will be able to get involved with some of the preparation and planting.

What Else Is Planned?

A parade and service is being planned by the Tynemouth World War One Commemoration project which will take place in Northumberland Square on Sunday 3rd August which hopefully will involve all Groups and sections within the District.

After that there will be a short dedication at the garden which, because of the size of it, will be limited as to who will attend, but we will be represented.

How do I find Out More

Scout Leaders will be able to get more information by reading the updates in Contact put in by Lucy Mace and John Swan.

Those updates will be added to this page for anyone in the District who doesn't get Contact.
